Check Movie Times Near You with the Flixter for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Cost: Free

Get it on iTunes

There are so many choices on the app store for movie applications.  So far we’ve reviewed Showtimes and Now Playing.  Movies by Flixter is my personal favorite so far.  It has inspired me to really sit down and do a comparison post of all the movie applications out there to give you guys a really good idea of which one to choose.  As with any location based application it will want to determine your current location so it can give you information pertaining movies close to you.  This one so far is the only one that has my small rural town’s cinema information.  You can choose to enter in any zipcode for custom data.  I think most of the apps we’ve reviewed will give you that capability.  This application offers you information on movies powered by Flixter so if you’re already a fan of that web service, this is definitely a clear choice for you.  One thing this one does the others don’t do is DVD release information and schedules, definitely good for anyone who buys or rents a lot of DVD titles.  I think this is the cleanest looking interface of all the movie apps we’ve reviewed so far.  We’re giving it a 4.75/5 and will do a detailed comparison of all movies apps we’ve seen this week.  Check it out!  It’s FREE!

Trapster iPhone App Review from Trapster.com

This kind of stuff is what the iPhone was made for!

Cost: FREE

Get it on iTunes

By connecting with Trapster users you can build a social network that will save you from getting a speeding ticket. It uses the GPS technology in your phone along with their web service to plot speed traps and police near your location.  Now that is a revolutionary use of the iPhone.  This is a location based app so you will be prompted to use your current location or not.  Trapster is an account based system as well, so you will need an account on Trapster.com.  Luckily, the app will allow you to sign up for the service on your first run.  Most of these applications and services are typically a little useless for me because I’m located in a fairly rural part of Eastern Kentucky.  Surprisingly there was data on the trapster network that a user had submitted.  Not sure if it originated from another iPhone user because this IS a fairly new application to the app store, but it’s safe to say if there is data in Hazard, KY…you’ll probably get data for your town as well.  Like I said this is an awesome app and I think a revolutionary use of the hardware.  Definitely recommended!  Check out our video review.

Fieldrunners iPhone and iPod Touch Game Review

Holy Crap this game owns!

Cost: $4.99

Get it on iTunes

Hey guys, I just downloaded Fieldrunners from Subatomic Studios, LLC and I’ve got to say this is one killer game.  The game is in an old classic “Zelda” style format, in fact it reminds me graphically of a lot of those Super NES titles.  The idea of the game is to drag and drop defense towers onto the board to stop oncoming opponents from making it to your base.  The game is a lot of fun and is one of the better demonstrations of the platforms graphic capabilities I think you are going to find.  The more games I get the more faith I have in this device as a gaming platform.  They are definitely simplistic in nature but are TONS of fun and have amazingly good graphics for a small portable device.  The only complaint I have with this game and the reason it didn’t score a 5 is there is no sound or music.  Check out my video review. I definitely give this game a good recommendation and at $4.99 you just can’t beat it.  Check it out!

Tilt Meter Pro - iPhone App Review

Never buy another leveling device again!  Straighten all your hanging pictures with your iPhone today!

Cost: $0.99

Get it on iTunes

I was made aware of a really cool new application on the app store called Tilt Meter Pro.  This is for very practical and specific purposes of leveling.  While I wouldn’t recommend the iPhone in any industrial setting this is an amazingly accurate leveling application.  Calibrating the device is an easy 4 step process and the app walks you through how to do this.  You only have to do this once.  It makes a great companion when hanging pictures on the wall!  I will never need to buy an automatic level gadget again, and this only cost me $0.99!  Amazing!  There is a “lite” version of the application which is the one I am testing , but it is meant only for testing purposes (reminds you to pay) and is free.

BobbleHead iPhone App Review

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

It may be a waste of time, but you’ll have fun doing it!

Cost: $0.99

Get it on iTunesicon

So this app may be one of the silliest on the app store but it is a REALLY well developed application.  Basically what this one does is take photos of people and allow you to crop their heads onto another body and create a BobbleHead character.  My daughter loves this and you can actually have a lot of fun with your friends turning them into bobble head dolls.  It allows you to utilize the built in camera and/or your photo library to collect the photos.  You can use the built in bodies or take a body from one of your pictures.  You can change the bobble sound to any prebuilt tones in the app, and shazam, a custom bobble head doll for your enjoyment.  It’s a lot of fun and will provide hours of laughter!  We give it 4/5 stars and it will cost you less than a buck!

AroundMe iPhone App Review

Yet another location based app, but a good one!

Cost: Free

Get it on iTunes

There are tons of location based apps going around but I like having a big selection and I really like this app.  Basically, this application does a quick Google search on categories based on your location.  It returns results in a list for you to browse. For instance, if you are running low on Gas, click the Gas category and instantly you are given all Gas stations close to your current location that are listed on Google. Typically anyone listed in the phone book is listed on Google, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the data will be accurate.  Aside from the obvious flaws in accuracy, it does a really good job, even in my rural location.  Definitely recommend adding this one to your phone, along with White Pages Mobile, it makes your phone one hell of a travel companion! AroundMe is available on iTunes for FREE and is developed by Tweakersoft.

Fring finally released on the Apple iTunes App Store!

Cost: FREE
Get it on iTunes

You’ve heard us going on about Fring for a couple of weeks now, actually pretty much as long as we’ve had this site online! Today it was finally approved by Apple and released to the iTunes App Store. I received a heads up this past weekend that it would be released this week and thankfully, on Friday, it was released into the wild. This app has been available for jailbreakers for some time and come with RAVE reviews.  When the app store went live, one of the first things I searched for was a Skype app.  Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past 5 years you know about VOIP system known as Skype. Click the link if you don’t to learn more. To my dismay, no search results were returned. A quick Google search came up with this thing called Fring which is already available on certain devices and was being tested by jailbreakers everywhere. Being the non-jailbreaking type, at least on my main phone, I decided to wait it out.  We started the site and one of our first posts was about our anticipation for this application.  Today it finally went up on the App Store and boy are we happy.

Fring allows us to chat via many different networks: AIM, Yahoo, Twitter, ICQ, etc.  A lot of apps allow you to use these networks, including the recently released and expensive Beejive.  What sets Fring apart from the others is, it allows you to connect to Skype and make Skype-out calls.  With this, we can use our wifi connection to make voice calls to anyone anywhere we have a connection on our iPhones. In my case, I am in a rural area and lack cellular signal in a lot of places.  On the same hand, I have a wifi connection in most places that I don’t have a cellular signal. Now I can use Skype to call out and receive calls.  The instant messenger capabilities for me is just an added bonus, a very useful one I might add. There are already similar service available for the iPhone, but none are FREE like this one.  We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time and trust me so far I’m very pleased with the application. A lot of people doubted it would ever make it, but here it is! I recommend it 100% to anyone, it should be required download for the iPhone.

Obama ‘08 iPhone App

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Could you have predicted this?

Cost: FREE
Get it on iTunes

4 years ago I would have never imagined we’d be packing a device like the iPhone around. I definitely would never have guessed that the next presidential candidate would have a campaign application to run on such device.  With the applications on this thing anything is possible and the possibilities are endless.  I recently came across the Obama ‘08 campaign application and I have to say, regardless of your politics, this is an awesome use of the phone. The whole idea is to make campaigning and contributing to the campaign as easy as possible. Say what you will about the democratic party, but they really understand technology and how to use it to work for their benefit.  From social media and networking to an iPhone application, they’ve really had an edge over the republican party this election.  The application will connect with your contacts and track whether or not you’ve called that contact about Obama, then you can mark their status.  You can get campaign related news feeds and even sign up for Email / SMS updates.  The interface is amazing and really looks great. It’s free and I think everyone should download this historic application no matter who you plan on voting for.  Very interesting.

iGolf

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

COST: FREE

Get it at iTunes

So your craving to play some golf, but its raining outside or the driving range is closed. No worries if you have an iPhone or iPod touch. iGolf turns your iPhone into a golf club. Basically you set-up your shot and then you swing your iPhone just like you would swing your club. iGolf guages your shot based on speed of swing and length of your swing. This is really worth the free price tag, but it does lack a little. There are only 3 holes to choose from and only 3 clubs, a driver, iron and putter. It does take sometime to get into the “swing” of things, but once you figure out the best approach it is really entertaining. One of the best things about this game is it does have a driving range feature. So if you just want to practice your swing and get the distance recorded just click the driving range and swing away. This is not a game you would want to have to pass time in the office while waiting to get off work, but is a fun way to use your iPhone or iPod touch as a gaming tool. Always remember to grip your iPhone tightly because I could see someone  accidently swinging their iPhone about 200 yards.
